EMILE
It was like looking into a mirror. His construction was nearly identical to mine. The only difference was that his human identity hadn’t survived the initial transformation like mine had.
Grant had been programmed to act a certain way. His original identity, which was partially restored from a hard drive, had merged with Program Twenty-Two over time, slowly becoming one being, but never fully developing into the person that Grant used to be.
I glanced over my brother’s data logs. Text filled the screen, most of which I could barely make sense of - though I was sure he’d written it that way on purpose, just in case McVeigh had gotten a hold of the drive. There was one section that stood out among the rest.
He reminds me of her. He’s eager for freedom, for a way out, something that is rarely seen in Programs. I’d programmed him to be a certain way, to act a certain way, but these thoughts? These thoughts are Grant’s, not Twenty-Two’s. He’s more human than I thought he’d be, but he’s still a machine, as hard as it is to believe.
But I need to ensure McVeigh doesn’t find out. If he knows just how advanced Grant is, who knows what he’ll do, but I’m most certain it won’t be anything good.
And a little further beneath that, Tommy’s name caught my eye.
When I’d been forced to fight him at the house, I thought I’d destroyed any chance of ever seeing him again, fearing that McVeigh would permanently deactivate him upon return. But he hadn’t. He’d kept him activated in hopes of turning him into Grant 2.0.
There are things I have been forced to do during my time here, things that I’m not proud of. Performing an update on Tommy’s deactivated body was one of them. I’d known this boy for years, long before he’d started seeing my sister. Seeing the vacant look in his eyes and the pale coloring that overtook his skin, I couldn’t help but to think what I was doing was wrong. He was fading away, and now McVeigh expected me to bring him back, but for what? To suffer some more?
None of this is right. None of it. But I know that he deserves a second chance. They all do. I only wish that I could fix them all. Until then, I will continue trying to right the wrongs of a sick man, in hopes of restoring humanity to how it once was.
Tommy. Just thinking of his name sent my mind into overdrive. I wanted to relive the memories, allowing myself to drown in the past, but just as I had closed my eyes, a soft knock sounded at the door. I spun around in my chair to find her standing there, fidgeting nervously. “You’re okay,” she said, sounding relieved.
When I met her eyes, everything came back to me at once. Her and Hayden. The way he used to smile whenever she was near. How they were practically inseparable. How she breathed a new appreciation for life into him.
